In our last blog post, we talked about taking the fear out of dental treatment with oral conscious sedation dentistry and how Eureka Smiles can provide many of our more nervous patients with an extremely relaxed, virtually pain-free dental experience. Today, we’ll talk about some of the potential side effects of oral conscious sedation so you will have a better idea of what to expect.
Fortunately, most patients do not experience any major side effects from oral conscious sedation dentistry. The first thing you’ll need to be aware of is that certain health conditions may preclude you from candidacy for oral conscious sedation. During your initial consultation here at our practice, our dentist will talk with you about your medical history and determine if this sedation dentistry technique is right for your needs. The most common side effect of oral conscious sedation is sleepiness and grogginess once treatment is complete. While this sedation dentistry technique is not designed to render patients fully asleep or unconscious, it does cause extreme drowsiness and it will take a little while before the effects wear off. It is very important that you make arrangements for someone to take you to and from the practice when you have your treatment.
Some patients may experience a “dry mouth” sensation after the procedure, but this should dissipate once the effects of the oral conscious sedation pill wear off. Temporary dizziness, headache, and lightheadedness may also be present in some patients after treatment; however, if these effects occur at all, they are rarely serious and fade quickly in most patients. Many people experience what may be considered a good side effect of oral conscious sedation: an “amnesic” effect from the sedation pill that leaves them with little to no memory of the dental procedure even taking place!
Oral conscious sedation has helped many individuals suffering from dental anxiety conquer their fear of the dentist and obtain necessary dental care. It is a very simple technique, and can ultimately provide patients with an extremely comfortable and stress-free dental experience.
