Our own Dr. Jack Griffin was recently invited to write a chapter in a new book about cosmetic dentistry. All proceeds from the book are being donated to the Kiwanis International charity. Below, Dr. Griffin answers questions about A Cup of Coffee with 10 of the Top Cosmetic Dentists in the United States – co-authored by Randy Rutherford, DDS and Randy Van Ittersum – and why patient education is so important to achieving a healthy, beautiful smile.

How did you come across the opportunity to contribute to this book?

A group of dentists, some already chosen for the book, were discussing practitioners from across the country that they thought had the experience, training, and qualifications needed to contribute. The goal was to create an informal book, told in casual fashion, which was meant to educate people interested in aesthetic dentistry, kind of like discussing something with a friend over a “cup of coffee.” The editor called me, did an interview, and asked what I had to offer to this project. We discussed some of the articles I have written, topics I teach other dentists on, and my philosophy with patients. Later I was called and told I was chosen to write a chapter.

What do you hope readers will be able to take away from this book?

The best thing a patient can take from the book is a very honest discussion of choices to make when considering cosmetic dentistry. The more educated the patient is, the more likely they are to receive the treatment that best meets a combination of their desires and dental needs. My goal was to provide the background needed to make a wise treatment decision with the dentist they chose. I discussed the many aspects of aesthetic dentistry such as bleaching, veneers, bonding, orthodontics, gum therapy, and other treatments that should be contemplated before beginning treatment. The goal of the book was to be informative and truthful while giving insight to most of the aspects when considering this life-altering treatment. Our best patients are those who are well-informed.

Why do you think it is important that this book directly supports Kiwanis?

It’s really cool to be involved with a project like this knowing that none of the contributors make any money from it and that all of the money was to be donated to a charity. Kiwanis was chosen in this case. The desire to help children goes along well with the mission of most dentists: to help people. Frankly, the aesthetic dentists in the book have been very successful and it is a good feeling to donate a bit of time and expertise while helping children in need to have a more fulfilling life. It’s a privilege to serve and to be involved in a project like this.

What is your favorite part about being featured in this book, and why?

It’s an honor to even be mentioned with some of the authors in this book. Truly, some of the most honorable talent in the world contributed here and I just hope that many patients who are thinking about cosmetic treatment take the time to look over the advice given here. The feedback has been very positive and it is gratifying to know that the message we were spreading has been well-received.

I was very fortunate to have a couple of nights free to write this chapter. I take pride in the fact that I have always written all of my own stuff and am very fortunate to be in the position to serve both patients and the aesthetic dental community. Teaching, sharing, and giving back to the profession are very important to me and the opportunity to help patients across the country is an honor. I hope that we can make patients better able to make wise choices so that the correct decisions are made, resulting in a lifetime of great smiling.
